Sick note? Why not try a “fit note”

The Department for work and pensions is making changes to absence by replacing the sick note with a new fit note that will allow doctors to send employees back to work after a 7 day period of illness.

Doctors will be able to advice patients as either ‘is not fit for work’ or ‘may be fit for work’. In the latter statement employees will be allowed to go back to work but only if extra support from their employer is available.

These changes are set to take place on 6th April for all employees in England, Scotland and Wales and is being implemented to try and cut down on absences and get the employee back into work whether that is to do their full job or just as much as their doctor sees fit.

These guidelines for work will be advised on a ‘Statement of Fitness for Work’ form that will detail the employee’s condition, what work they will be able to carry out and if they require a reassessment after a set period of time.
