Shockingly High Sickness Rates Throughout Councils in Northern Ireland

Authorby e-days 21 November, 2014

Staff absenteeism in Northern Ireland’s councils is currently at an all-time high, with an average yearly absence rate of 12 days per employee.

A recent report by the local government auditor has announced that sickness levels have risen by 15% throughout Northern Ireland’s 26 councils. This means that on average, 12 sick days are taken by each of the 9,700 council staff members in this region every year.

Even more shockingly, one council has reported their individual average as 17.2 days of absence per employee.

With the UK yearly average at 6.6 days of absence, Irish councils are facing a potential crisis with absence levels at almost double this national figure. Some authorities have made plans to assess and reduce staff absence through staff health and well-being programmes.

It’s clear that this is an issue that isn’t going to be resolved without a long-term management strategy in place.
