Bradford factor scoring

Bradford factor calculator

Bradford Factor explained

The Bradford Factor is a simple formula that calculates a score for each employee by applying a relative weighting to their unplanned absence. Designed around the principle that repeat, short term absence has greater operational impact, higher scores represent increased disruption for the organisation.

Bradford scores help identify areas of problem absenteeism by highlighting patterns of absence that are worthy of further investigation.

Bradford formula

The formula for the Bradford Factor is:

E x E x D = B

Where E is the number of episodes of absence and D is the total number of days absent in a rolling 52 week period.

  • Benchmarking Tool

The Bradford Factor helps initiate mandatory procedures for tackling absenteeism, allowing managers to compare attendance between different departments, removing the difficulties and reluctance that line managers often face when having to discipline a close staff member.

  • Trigger points

Creating triggers, whereby certain actions are taken when an employee’s Bradford score reaches a certain point, can help with disciplinary procedures, providing a fair and transparent evaluation tool that’s easily understood by all staff.

  • Reduced absenteeism

Studies show that by educating staff about the Bradford Factor and showing them their score on a regular basis, absenteeism can be reduced by up to 20% by deterring unnecessary absenteeism.
